Dr. Rana Tarzemany

Dr. Tarzemany is a specialist in Periodontics and the Director of the Graduate Periodontics Program at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of British Columbia (UBC).

​

Dr. Tarzemany’s meticulous approach to periodontics and surgery is thoughtful and evidence-based. She focuses on periodontal health, gum grafting & and bone grafting, and dental implants, in addition to other periodontal surgical and nonsurgical procedures.

Education

Dr. Rana Tarzemany received her dental degree from Azad Tehran Dental School and completed her graduate studies in the field of combined Ph.D. and Diploma in Periodontics at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She is a certified periodontist, a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada FRCD(C), and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and Dental Implant Surgery (DABP).

Awards

Dr. Tarzemany has received outstanding recognition and academic achievements for her research which centers around the molecular mechanisms of wound healing and scar formation. In 2015, she was the first ever Canadian to win the highly prestigious international Volpe Competition that recognizes the best periodontal research from the US, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Dr. Tarzemany has also been the recipient of numerous prestigious national and international awards including the Joseph Tonzetich Fellowship (2012, 2013, and 2014), the B.W. Leung Award (2015), Dr. Donald M. Brunette Award (2016) for academic excellence within UBC Faculty of Dentistry, and the Osteology Education Grant for participation in the Osteology Research Academy, Harvard School of Dental Medicine (2016).

 

Teaching

Dr. Tarzemany is currently the Director of the Graduate Periodontics Program at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of British Columbia (UBC). This leadership role allows her to oversee the postdoctoral educational program for advanced specialty training in periodontics. She has been with the UBC Faculty of Dentistry since 2010, began her teaching career in 2014, and graduated with a combined Ph.D. and Diploma in Periodontics in 2018. She has also continued her research, focused on molecular biology of oral wound healing, resulting in several publications in peer-reviewed journals, and winning many national and international awards, including the prestigious Volpe Prize.

 

Pursuit of Mastery

During her three-year surgical residency at UBC, Rana gained valuable didactic and clinical training in all aspects of periodontal and implant surgeries. Her ultimate goal, as a researcher-clinician, is to make a more meaningful translation of bench-top research into clinical application.. In addition, Rana has authored several publications in peer-reviewed journals and presented her research findings at various conferences within Canada and internationally.

Personal

In her spare time, Dr. Tarzemany likes to spend time with family and friends, enjoying various culinary pursuits, baking, and engaging in thought-provoking discussions around the world, politics, literature, and above all, poetry.
